I’m Building a Legal Basement Suite. What Are the Electrical Requirements?
Under the current Alberta Building Code and CEC 2024, a legal suite requires interconnected smoke and CO alarms (if one goes off, they all go off), dedicated circuits for the suite’s kitchen appliances and heating, and arc-fault protection for almost all living areas and bedrooms. We can walk you through a full suite-compliance audit.

Do I Need a 200-Amp Panel to Add an EV Charger?
Not necessarily. We first run a load calculation to determine whether your existing service can handle a Level 2 charger. If it can’t, an EVEMS (Black Box) is often a faster and more affordable solution than a full service upgrade.
What Is a Black Box (EVEMS)?
An Electric Vehicle Energy Management System monitors your home’s total power draw in real time. If you’re cooking dinner with the dryer running, it temporarily pauses your charger to keep the load within your panel’s capacity — then resumes automatically. Most people charge overnight when the house is quiet, so you’ll rarely notice it working.
Which Charger Brands Do You Install?
We work with most major Level 2 charger brands, including ChargePoint, Tesla (NACS), Eaton, and others. We’re also a certified ChargePoint installer. We can supply the charger or install one you’ve already purchased.
Can You Install a Charger in My Detached Garage?
Yes. A detached garage installation requires running power from your main panel — either overhead or underground. Underground runs must meet specific CEC separation requirements from other utilities. We handle the full scope, including any trenching coordination.

When is a 200-Amp Upgrade Necessary?
Under the new CEC Rule 8-200, we perform a mandatory load calculation before any major change. You likely need a service upgrade if you are:

What if I Just Want to Add an Ev Charger and My Panel Is Full?
You may not need a full upgrade. In many cases, we can install an EVEMS (Electric Vehicle Energy Management System), also called a “Black Box,” which monitors your home’s power usage in real time and manages the charger to stay within your existing service capacity. It’s faster, less expensive, and fully compliant with CEC 2024.
How Long Does a Panel Upgrade Take?
Most residential panel upgrades are completed in one day. The timeline from booking to final inspection, including permit processing and utility scheduling, typically runs one to two weeks.
Do I Need to Be Home?
Yes — power will be off for several hours, and we’ll need access to the panel location. We’ll confirm the full schedule with you in advance so there are no surprises.
What Is a “Power Surge,” and Do I Need a Whole-Home Protector?
Surges can come from lightning or, more commonly, from the utility grid (Fortis/Enmax). A Whole-Home Surge Protective Device (SPD) is installed at your main panel and protects your expensive electronics — fridges, TVs, and computers — from being fried by voltage spikes. In Alberta’s storm season, these are highly recommended.

Do I Need a Permit for My Renovation Electrical Work?
Yes — in Calgary and Chestermere, a General Wiring permit is required for any work that adds to or modifies your home’s circuits. Unpermitted work is flagged on home inspections, can void your insurance in the event of a claim, and will need to be redone at your expense if discovered during a future sale.
Can a Homeowner Pull Their Own Electrical Permit?
A homeowner can pull a permit for their own primary residence — but not for rental properties or secondary suites. Having a licensed electrician pull and manage the permit means the work is done to code from the start and the inspection risk falls on us, not you.
What Is the “Renovator’s Trap” with AFCI?
Under CEC 2024, if you extend an existing circuit by more than a few feet during a renovation, the entire circuit often needs to be upgraded to AFCI protection. This surprises a lot of homeowners who planned a simple outlet addition. We identify these requirements upfront so there are no surprises mid-project.
Can You Work Alongside My Other Contractors?
Yes — we’re used to working in active renovation sites alongside framers, plumbers, and drywallers. We’ll coordinate timing with your GC or directly with the other trades to make sure the electrical doesn’t create a bottleneck.

Do I Need an Electrical Permit for Pot Lights?
Yes. In Calgary and Chestermere, any new lighting circuit or new fixture installation requires a General Wiring permit. The inspection process protects your home and keeps your insurance valid.
My Led Pot Lights Buzz and Flicker When Dimmed — Can You Fix That?
Yes, and it’s a common issue. The problem is almost always a mismatch between the LED driver and the dimmer switch. Most older dimmers are “leading edge” (designed for incandescent bulbs), while LEDs require “trailing edge” or ELV dimmers. We can replace just the dimmers in most cases.
What Is an IC Rating and Why Does It Matter?
An IC (Insulation Contact) rating means the fixture can safely be covered by attic insulation without overheating. Non-IC fixtures generate heat that can’t escape when buried in insulation — creating a fire risk. Alberta’s climate means heavily insulated ceilings, so IC-rated fixtures aren’t optional for top-floor installations.
How Many Pot Lights Do I Need in a Room?
It depends on ceiling height, room size, and the fixtures’ beam angle and lumen output. A common starting point is one fixture per 15–20 square feet for general lighting. We’ll give you a specific recommendation based on your space during the layout consultation.

What’s the Difference Between Cat6 and Cat6a?
Cat6 supports up to 10Gbps at shorter cable runs and is sufficient for most homes. Cat6A has additional shielding, handles 10Gbps over longer runs, and is the better choice for future-proofing or larger homes. We’ll recommend the right option based on your layout.
Can You Run Data Cable During My Renovation?
Yes — and this is the ideal time to do it. Running cables through open walls is significantly easier and cheaper than fishing them through finished drywall later. We coordinate with your other trades to get data roughed in before the walls close.
Do I Still Need Wi-Fi if My Home Is Wired?
Yes — phones and tablets aren’t wired. But with access points pre-wired in ceiling locations and hardwired back to your central switch, your Wi-Fi becomes dramatically more stable and consistent than anything a consumer mesh system can deliver.
Why Use an Electrician for Data Wiring Instead of an IT Company?
Data wiring inside your home’s walls is governed by the Canadian Electrical Code — including fire rating requirements and separation from power conductors. A licensed electrician understands both the network performance side and the building code requirements.

What Appliances Can the Black Box Manage?
The Black Box works with any high-draw 240V appliance: Level 2 EV chargers, hot tubs, swim spas, central air conditioners, steam showers, saunas, and more. It is paired specifically to one managed appliance while continuously monitoring the rest of your home’s total load.
Is It Safe to Pause Power to My EV Charger or Hot Tub?
Yes. The Black Box uses a fail-safe design that pauses power to the managed appliance before your panel reaches its limit — then automatically restores it when capacity is available. EV chargers and hot tubs are designed to handle intermittent power, so there is no risk of damage to the equipment.
Will I Notice When the Black Box Is Working?
Most people don’t. Pauses typically happen during peak household use — cooking dinner, running the dryer — and most EV charging happens overnight when the rest of the house is quiet. In practice, you still wake up to a full charge.
Does a Black Box Installation Still Require a Permit?
Yes. Any new 240V appliance circuit requires a General Wiring permit in Calgary and Chestermere, regardless of whether an Intelligent Load Controller is involved. We handle the permit and inspection coordination as part of every installation.
How Does the Black Box Compare to a Full Service Upgrade?
A service upgrade is the right answer when your home’s total demand genuinely exceeds your service capacity — for example, when adding multiple high-draw loads or legalizing a basement suite. The Black Box is a faster, more cost-effective solution when your panel has physical space for a breaker but not the continuous load margin for a single high-draw appliance. We run a load calculation first and recommend the right approach for your situation.
For context, a full service upgrade can run roughly $3,500–$5,000 or more and requires coordinating with the utility (Fortis/Enmax) to change the service. A Black Box usually costs significantly less and can be installed in a few hours — often the fastest way to add a high-draw load to a 100-amp home.
Is the Black Box Approved Under the Canadian Electrical Code?
Yes. Brands like Black Box Innovations and DCC are CSA/UL approved and fully compliant with the Canadian Electrical Code (Section 8). Using one of these devices allows us to legally omit the EV charger from your home’s load calculation — which is why you often don’t need a service upgrade.
My Black Box Is Making a Slight Humming Sound — Is That Normal?
A very faint hum is normal for devices with internal transformers or contactors. However, if you hear a loud buzzing or “chattering” sound, it could indicate a loose connection or debris in the contactor. Give us a call, and we can perform a quick diagnostic check.

How Much Do You Charge for a Service Visit?
Our standard service call is $160, which covers the first hour of a Master Electrician’s time. This includes travel to your home and the diagnostic work to find the root of your electrical issue.
Why Do You Suggest a Two-Man Crew for Some Jobs?
For tasks like pulling wire through finished walls, installing heavy panels, or large-scale pot light installs, two sets of hands make the job significantly safer and faster. At $170/hr for both, it often ends up costing less in total labour than one person working alone for twice as long.
Do You Charge Travel Fees for Residents in Chestermere?
No. As a local Chestermere business, we do not charge additional travel or “trip” fees for our neighbours within the city limits.

What Is “Arc Fault” (AFCI) Protection, and Why Did My Breaker Trip?
Unlike standard breakers that trip on a “short circuit,” AFCI breakers detect dangerous electrical “arcing” (sparks) caused by damaged wires or loose connections behind walls. If your AFCI is tripping, it is doing its job — preventing a potential fire. We use specialized diagnostic tools to find the exact point of the arc.
Is Aluminum Wiring Safe?
Aluminum wiring is safe if the connections are maintained. The danger comes from oxidization at switches and outlets, which causes heat. We provide AlumiConn or “pig-tailing” services using specialized anti-oxidant paste and connectors to make your aluminum-wired home safe and insurable.
